In different organizations, sometimes learning is a punishment. If people don't do the right thing or there's a safety issue or a compliance issue, we send people to training. The other end of that spectrum is it's a reward for people. So, your top performers, key talent. So how do we find somewhere in the middle? We're Only Human Episode 179 In this episode of We're Only Human, host Ben Eubank...

What's it going to take for them to be able to retire? They're going to need to number one: save. Number two, have earnings on what they've saved. And number three, they're going to have to minimize the deductions coming out of their accounts. We call that the three key drivers. Chris Thixton, Principal, Pension Consultants, Inc. Recruiting is preparation for retention. I think it's really top of mind that we should focus on that because a lot of people think that recruiting is just the top of funnel just getting people in the door. But the experience that people have during the recruitment process... Data has supported that it flows into the retention of that individual throughout their life cycle. We're Only Human Epi...

I'm new to the summer school and I am attending after the class originally held earlier in the day. I hope this count for my credit 😊
Steve Browne is amazing!
Honestly this new generation has no desire to teach when they get older and older people I'm sure are sick of these kids

Hey, one question How can Arya help gig job guys, the tech market is narrowing day by day but positions like CSR, ServiceDesk, and pick packers are increasing. So how does Arya value this section of hiring?
Love this!!! I still live by the take away of doing HR where you are!
Good advice! I’m finishing my associates in HR from a community college and I’m trying to figure out what’s the best way to get into my HR career!
Hello, I know it’s been 11 months but have you used your Associates degree to secure a job in HR? I am interested in obtaining a Associates Degree in HR. Thanks ☺️

I'm from Ontario, which short-term online HR certificate program is best, please add a link to make it easy.
As someone who’s just starting out with no prior experience, would you say the certificate is a good place to start? I’m 40 and looking for a career. Do you need to be a math whiz to do this profession?
It’s a legal way to discriminate someone. If everyone in the company is gay and lesbian they expects u to be like them to fit
The title says it all ! 👏
Ben Eubanks should be ashamed to be promoting this filth.
This is absolutely racist, disgusting and hypocritical.
You kind of remind me of Troy Aikmen hall of famer from the Dallas Cowboys
The change we've seen in the workplace is "unprecedented" and "generation-defining," says Dr. Polizzi. And she's absolutely right. I wish this message would thunder throughout social media because too many of us are not acknowledging how the pandemic has affected our lives. It's a message that gives us permission to practice self-compassion. Excellent talk!
You are a fraud. Cultural fit is a vague enough to not get the company into legal trouble for discriminating.
Hi Ben, I appreciate your video on attending the SHRM conference for the first time. I am newly certified and I was looking into attending a conference next year, but wasn’t sure since I am an introverted person! I attended the Gulf Coast Symposium this year and I found that maybe going with a team of co workers or some one else you know is a bit more exciting and interactive. I did do some networking as you pointed out but again I think attending with a friend or coworker could be a little better for us introverts. Another question have, do you have to attend all 3 days or can you select which days you would like to attend the conference? Thanks for sharing and I look forward to attending next year.
Thank you for the sharing! Really helpful! I also feel comforted by the fact that I'm not alone, there's lots of ppl out there facing similar situations and problems and we can help out each other :)
Spoken like a champion
I'm only just catching up now on the replays as I wasn't able to attend the lives but just wanted to say that I am enjoying all the speakers and particularly liked Georges ending message about transparency so much that I made a note of it which I thought I'd share here: "Transparency allows that window of trust to exist and removes insecurities and doubts of uncertainty. Therefore we should challenge ourselves to remove the walls that we may have built up because we have been hurt or offended in the past and set that expectation and that standard for ourselves to really open that window, that door, that room, of vulnerability, even when it does not make us look like what we want to be. When we are not perfect, it's okay - none of us are perfect - but in being a 'failure' we can be 'a great failure' by failing forward rather than backwards. The more transparent we are about who we are, where we are and where we want to be, the more this will help us as leaders because leadership in life is a sum of how well we lead ourselves. It's okay not to be okay so long as we use that to lead ourselves into tomorrow."
If my goal is to be a HR Director, what way should I go first? I am an entry level, just graduated from university so I am a little confuse on what way I should take
Thx for including me for this amazing session. Loved the insights, shared comments and learnings
😎
Thank you, I really appreciate this
I like how you're taking a data-first approach to this.
Very insightful and informative, thanks alot mr. Ben ❤
Good stuff here.
Great podcast
HR Generalist is just a way to underpay and overwork somebody so they do t have to hire the proper staffing
I think a master degree yes but a banchelor degree no in HR
I study bachelor degree in decisiom science ..... but i love hr so i will take master in hr
His advice is outdated just because today, everyone has a bachelor's degree. I feel like a master's definitely makes you stand out and can make you earn more money too.
CORPORATE AMERICA IS WHITE CULTURE SO that means if you fit that narrative you will always get the job. Plain and simple. I even know Black people who pretend to act and fit with white culture to get and keep jobs.
Ben, Was your brother host of the newlywed game?
With me being new to the HR world as an HR Assistant, this video was SUPER encouraging! I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Checking in from Abita Springs Louisiana
Very useful information for this first-timer. Thank you! SHRM2021
Regarding Faye Ekong's conversation it made me think of this phrase...."People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care."
My question is what does HR fall under ? Sociology or no I’m currently a high school graduate and I’m very interested in the HR field but what major does it fall under
As an HR student, HR is related to sociology, but it doesn't fall under sociology. In many universities, HR is a type of business or administration or management or arts and science degree. For example, there are human resources management degrees. There are also administration degrees that have credits in HR. As for business, I'd say that in some universities, HR is part of a business department. In other universities, you can study industrial relations (it's connected to HR) and in the arts and science department. Overall, it'll really depend on how each university categorizes it. It's a social science degree for sure.
HRSummerSchool was awesome!! Thank you Ben, and the team!!!
That intro music, opening with a "in-your-face" stat, high energy... top notch brother.
I have a BA in English but no HR work experience. Should I go for the aPHR or the SHRM?
I enjoyed the discussion on employee feedback and how to better apply it to business outcomes.
Question: Why do companies post job positions with the words “assistant” or “clerk”, and not “generalist? Is there a tangible difference between an HR Clerk, assistant, and generalist? I.e. responsibilities, education?
They are more entry level roles. A Clerk or Admin would deal with a lot of filing and taking and making calls. Kind of front desk so to speak. They may dive into things like time cards to an extent or new hire packets for orientations. HR Assistants dive a little deeper than a clerk or Admin and have a few more HR responsibilities. But all of the above have a heavy focus in the administrative part of HR. Again this varies with each company.
